Awaiting Word

"Is war a preferable alternative? if a child's afraid of the dark, do we solve the problem by buying her a gun?" -john e.dgar w.ideman I haven't heard from Paul in several days now. Silently. I'm hoping that I'll receive a surprise phone call from Kuwait, telling me that he's safely out of Iraq and on his way home. The 4th ID is sending more and more troops home everyday. The brass hopes to have them totally replaced by Easter. It's been a helluva year, and one which I don't want to repeat. It's one thing to be in a war yourself; it's quite another to send your children off to war. In my lifetime, World War 2, The Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam War, Grenada, Bosnia, Desert storm in Iraq, Afghanistan, The present war in Iraq and a bunch of minor world military crises have punctuated the warring nature of human beings. The ten-year span of President Clinton's administration lulled us to sleep because it was a relatively peaceful period. I wonder what the world would be like today, if we just only had pursued Bin Laden and his thugs, instead of invading Iraq? I know Iraq is better off without Saddam Hussein, but was war our only alternative? We'll never know!
