War Weary
"A bad accident happened outside of our compound today, dad" read the msm message from my son in the "Sunni Triangle" today. He said it was an auto accident involving two American vehicles, one contained CIA personnel. Six Americans were seriously injured.
My son, who is an army combat medic didn't elaborate on his involvement in treating the wounded, but I knew from the urgency of his writing style that he was upset, and probably deeply involved. He really wanted to express his strong desire to leave Iraq. With a few short weeks left on his tour of duty, he's sick of war, of violence and of living in a foreign country. A country with an unobtainable language, unfamiliar food, inhospitable weather and factions of people who hate you. He longs for America, his family, and the familiarity of a culture that he grew up in. Despite his weariness, my son stands by the mission of the past year and like his companions and fellow soldiers is proud to have served and to be counted in the fight for the liberation of Iraq and the freedom of its citizens.
